WHY LEVER ACTIONS

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

Fast follow-up shots, a slim carry and a classic look make lever guns a favourite for bush hunting, deer and bear country, and the cabin.

Calibre.30-30 Win is the classic deer round; .45-70 Govt hits hard at bush ranges; .357/.44 Mag carbines can share ammo with a revolver; .22 LR and .22 WMR keep plinking cheap. Long Ranger-style rifles add .223, .308 and 6.5 CM.
LoadingA side loading gate lets you top up without taking anything apart (Henry Big Boy Steel Side Gate, Marlin, Rossi R95). Classic Henrys load through the front of the magazine tube. Some newer models use a detachable box magazine (Long Ranger, Supreme).
CapacityTube capacity depends on calibre and tube length: 5 in the Rossi R95 Trapper (.45-70), 8+1 in the Marlin 1894 Trapper (.44 Mag), 4 in the Chiappa 1886 MHR (.45-70). Check the listing for your exact model.
Barrel length16 to 16.5 in carbines handle quick in thick bush; 20 to 21 in barrels give a longer sight radius and a bit more velocity.
ReceiverBlued or stainless steel is the workhorse; brass receivers (Golden Boy, Big Boy) are the classic look; the Long Ranger uses an aerospace alloy receiver, and the Marlin 1894 Trapper is stainless.
Sights & opticsLook for drilled-and-tapped receivers or a rail if you want a scope or red dot. The Henry Big Boy Steel and Marlin 1894 Classic use adjustable semi-buckhorn rear sights; the Long Ranger ships without sights, ready for a scope.
Threaded barrelsSome models, like the Henry X Model and the threaded Marlin 1894 Trapper, have a 5/8×24 threaded muzzle with a thread cap, handy for a muzzle brake.
Large loopA bigger lever loop fits gloved hands in Alberta cold. Many models offer it from the factory or as an aftermarket lever.
ClassificationLever actions are generally non-restricted in Canada, and the listings shown say so, but always check the specific model's classification before you buy.
